Postcards.

This page contains postcards that I have seen on eBay for sale. These are not the usual run of the mill ones, but ones that you rarely see. Because of this they all sold for more than I was prepared to bid; but nevertheless it is good to know that these scarcer types are out there somewhere.

Littlehampton Smeaton Hurst Mevagissey

First is a nice close up of one of the old 'salt and pepper pot' pair at Littlehampton. These were pulled down at the start of WW2 so as not to easily identify the harbour. Next is Smeaton's memorial in the church where he is buried (I forget where), followed by an unusual view of Hurst and finally a nice close up of Mevagissey in Cornwall.

Newport Thorngumbald Spit Sand Fort Pennennis

I do not think that there was a light at Newport, I think that this one is on the quay waiting to be shipped somewhere; the Thorngumbald lights on the Humber about 1915 is quite rare - I would have liked that one. The same is true of Spit Sand Fort about the same time, and finally a nice early card of Peninnis on the Scilly Isles.

Smeaton

This view of the commencement of the dismantling of Smeaton's lighthouse at the Eddystone in 1882 is not really a postcard but a glass slide seen on eBay; but I felt I had to include it somewhere.

Spitsandfort image716 image713

Another view of Spit Sand Fort. Next is Braunton lighthouse. It was mis quoted as 'Saunton' but that did not stop someone paying £24 for it. Finally Flatholm - you do not see many of them.

Blyth Blyth image712

The postcard on the left went for a few pounds but the real photo of Blyth on the right went for £19, but not to me. Next is a nice shot of Hunstanton; normally you have to view this through the old ruins.

Walney Weston Point image714 image715

The postcard of Walney Island is nice, but the one of Weston Point is even better. I have never seen one before, and this sold on eBay for £42-99, but, again, not to me. Plover Scar/Cockersand on the River Lune and Bidston next to it are two other rare card not often seen.

Leasowe Leasowe2 image705

Leasowe. These are the first that I have seen. Likewise I have not seen a Point Lynas view of the lantern room before.

Harrington Wyre Paull1 Paull2

Both Harrington and Wyre sold for over £22 each. These two views of Paull lighthouse on the Humber were not cheap either.

Here we see two of the three lighthouses at Silloth. The two on the left show the only remaining light today called Skinburness. The two on the right show the pier light that went when the pier was demolished. The light not shown was a little out to sea and called Lees Scar.

This picture of Seaton sold on eBay for £29 in 2008, but I have grave doubts whether or not it really is the old Seaton lighthouse.
